Who Are We?

Angela Rowan, MSW, LICSW

Angela received her B.A. in Psychology and Gender Studies from Bard College, and her M.S.W. in Clinical Social Work from Smith College School for Social Work.  She has worked in women's health and has worked with survivors of sexual and intimate violence for over 10 years.  Angela is the co-founder and former facilitator of New England SOFFA's, a support and social group for partners, family, and friends of transgender people.  Angela has done research on the effects of trauma on individuals, and has published on the topic of GLBT youth.  Angela has also presented training on transgender issues for a variety of mental health agencies and educational institutions. 

Angela's interests as a therapist include:

  • Working with adults, adolescents, couples and families
  • Psychotherapy for Transgender individuals and their families
  • Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual identity and mental health concerns
  • Recovery from sexual violence and other traumas
  • Body image and eating disorders
  • Psychotherapy that incorporates a mind/body/spirit perspective

 

J. Michael Rowan, MSW, LICSW

Michael has a B.A. in Psychology from Rutgers College and an M.S.W. in clinical social work from Smith College School for Social Work. He received the Joan Laird thesis award for excellence in research about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people for his thesis "Female-to-Male Transsexuals in Childhood, Adolescence, and Early Adulthood".

Michael's interests as a psychotherapist include:

  • Working with Transgender people regarding gender identity exploration, assistance and guidance through medical and social transition from FTM and MTF, and mental health concerns unrelated to gender identity
  • Working with Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual people regarding sexual identity exploration, assistance with the process of coming out, and mental health concerns unrelated to sexual orientation
  • Helping people recover from abuse and other traumatic experiences
  • Using play therapy to help children who have experienced abuse, trauma, or loss, and to help children adjust to changes such as divorce, foster care, and adoption
  • Working with parents/caregivers about attachment parenting concerns
